"Union Busting" - Sunday, February 24th @ 9pm EST

E-mail Print PDF
Lord Wellings took pen to paper and penned out a call for protest...

Friends of Britannia,

Brothers and Sisters of Britannia! As many of you know the city of Skara Brae has recently enacted laws which run contrary and independent of the Kings Law and seeks to displace the established freedoms and protections we are all offered under the Kings Grace!

I invite each and every free and loyal Britannian to join with me in the streets of Skara Brae, starting at the Community Center this Sunday at 9pm EST! We shall march and peacefully gather in protest of this travesty of justice, bring a sword and display it proudly!

We shall not be moved.

~The Falcon of New Magincia

"I hope that will do it," Adamu said to himself and handed the page to a squire to be copied and distributed.
"Should be an interesting evening." Lady Amandine winked at Adamu as the squire ran out of the room.

Mayor Blackwell,

By now you have been met by the Royal Envoy sent by myself in the name of the King. Please welcome them as you would welcome myself, or the King himself.

The King wishes to receive word of the situation in Skara Brae as well as judge the stability of the peace.

In the name of the King,

Lord Dupre

Lord Dupre,

I regret that your envoy has not yet arrived in Skara Brae. When they do arrive, I will of course provide them every courtesy.

Marshall Blackwell, Mayor of Skara Brae

Pawns to king 3.

The troupe of three were designed to instil respect, but not provide a threat. A royal envoy, sent by King Blackthorn, dressed in his colors. The black and red checkered tabards declared that these were the King's Men, and as such untouchable.

"You should not run into any resistance, if you do, come home. Do not draw your weapons, they are for display. Test their resolve, and uncover any information you can. Talk to the Mayor, see if you can figure out what is going on." Dupre had told the three in Britain.

As they approached the public moongate the three got nervous.

"Why send us before dawn? This whole thing makes me nervous. All this posturing in Skara Brae, seems suspicious." One of the three said as they entered the clearing.

"Whole thing feels like we are lambs being lead to the slaughter" said the second.

"Shut up you two, this isn't a big deal. It's just Skara Brae!" said the third and stepped into the open moongate.

The three arrived in the clearing of the Skara Brae moongate just before dawn.

A pretty young woman in a mixture of purple and brown dressings waited for them with a smile on her face. "The Union Welcomes you to Skara Brae..." she said with a brief bow and a curtsey.

Dawn finally broke and flooded their eyes with a brief shine, at the same time there was a rustling of the trees behind them. It was the last sound the three men ever heard.

A War of 32, across 64.

Lord Dupre threw another log on the fire and stoked it a moment, a mundane task but one he didn't balk from.

Lady Amandine and King Blackthorn sat at odds with one another across a checkerd board of warfare.

"Have you seen what is going on in Skara Brae?" King Blackthorn finally spoke aloud.

"Blackwell has always been weak and easily pushed around." Dupre turned to Danica who said nothing in response, her head in the game.

"Still I had not expected something as honest and true as a workers union to turn so sinister so quickly." said the King.

"Do you want me to intercede in city affairs with the weight of the Crown?" Dupre's tone turned deathly serious.

"I do not like hammering in nails with cannon balls Dupre."

"What then your Majesty?"

"This is obviously a ploy for more power, some sort of sinister plot in the guise of something else." The King looked across at Lady Amandine who still had not made her move. "What do you think?"

"Check." Lady Amandine raised her eyes from the board and looked across the board at her King with a smile.

"I think our Lady has her mind elsewhere." Dupre smirked.

Lord Dupre and Lady Amandine had hardly become friends, although through their loyalty to the King and their country had found a mutual respect for one another, despite their previous dealings.

"On the contrary, I agree with our King." Danica sat back and waited for the next move.

"...In what regard?" Blackthorn asked.

"The weight of the crown is heavy, why slam it down on Skara Brae. This is a city matter, let the people decide what they want. If they really believe that banning swords from town will keep them safe..."

"...a foolish notion." Dupre interrupted.

"...Of course it is. But some people are prone to fear, prone to conflict rather than logic. Criminals, Evildoers, and... Politicians... prey on that fear."

"I am not a politician Amandine." the King said with a smile. "No need to curtail your words on my behalf." Blackthorn then moved a rook across the board removing him from check.

"Of course not your Majesty." Danica quickly moved again. "Check."

"I think she may have you this time M'Lord." Dupre approached the board, finally interested in the game.

"I like to let her feel she is doing well." Blackthorn moved his King.

"What are you going to do about Skara Brae?" Dupre insisted.

"Nothing?" Danica looked up surprised and Dupre's curious look mirrored both their sentiments.

"I can't go smashing down on every town every time they make a city ordinance I don't like."

"You are the King..."

"I wish to be a King, not a Tyrant."

"But what of this Union?" Dupre crossed his arms.

"This is the same group that was bothering that Healer outside Britain, yes?"

"Yes, they have all but put his building plans on hold. He has come to call several times, and I have turned him away." Dupre took a seat by the fire.

"I won't send troops to smash a Union that has done nothing so far but dabble in politics. But I would like more information, send an envoy into Skara. See what is happening there. Put my colors on them and arm them as you normally would."

"You think they would block a Royal envoy, or force them to disarm?" Lady Amandine peered at the King from under her curls of Red.

"They would be foolish to do so." Dupre turned away from the fire to get another look at the board.

"Just a fact finding mission, if they meet armed response, tell them to retreat. I just want more information." the King picked up a pawn as he spoke and placed it forward two spaces.

"You really plan on doing nothing about this silly law, disarming law abiding citizens?"

"Nothing at all, let the people decide. However..."

Danica studied the board and judged herself in superior positioning. "I finally have him!" She thought to herself and moved her queen across the board.

"However?" Dupre finally spoke after several moments.

"However, sometimes the people just need a bit of encouragement." Blackthorn picked up a bishop and placed it next to Danica's King, protected by the pawn. "Checkmate." He said with a smirk.

"No way!" Danica stood, surprised. She studied the board and finally gave in to defeat placing her king laying down on the board.

"Encouragement eh?" Danica shook her head.

King Blackthorn sat back and nodded to Lady Amandine. "Encouragement."

"Understood your Majesty." Danica and Dupre both stood and bowed to take their leave.

As the two exited the room together and closed the door, Danica whispered, "I almost had him that time."

"No you didn't, you know he enjoys playing the game and constantly staying one step ahead. He does the same to me when we play."

"One day he will make a mistake."

"Don't Count on it Amandine." Dupre smiled and knocked his elbow into hers playfully. "What are you gonna do about Skara?"

"You mean, 'Encouragement'?"

"Mmm Hmm."

"I am going to let Wellings decide what that means. It cant come from us, if it does it will seem to come from the King."

"True, Ill send the envoy in the morning." Dupre turned to walk down a separate hall. "Goodnight Amandine... unless." Dupre laughed.

"In your dreams Dupre." Danica scoffed in feigned offense.

The two then made their way down the halls opposite one another till the morning.

A Series of Documents from the desk of the Mayor of Skara Brae.

People of Skara Brae,

I know I speak for all of you when I say that I am deeply saddened and troubled by the tragedy that has struck our tiny city of Skara Brae. Within Britannia we are known as a peaceful, quiet hamlet that sets an example of peace and prosperity to our nation.

The tragic events two evenings ago outside the Shattered Skull tavern has struck a chord with me and I feel an overwhelming sense of personal responsibility to make sure that such an incident can never happen again.

I feel that in this instance both parties of this incident are victims. While it is true, one lies dead in the street and the other hides out of shame. It is not the peaceful loving and good people involved that are responsible for this terrible tragedy. It is of course the tool and instrument of the murder that is of to blame! Good people do not kill one another, I am of the impression that it is indeed the sword that is to be blamed for this terrible act!

I have issued a pardon to the man known as Chase the Murderer. After speaking with him, I am convinced that while his hand did hold the blade, it is the blade that is responsible, not the man wielding it!

I will be signing into law a moratorium on all bladed weapon sales starting immediately. Any merchant caught selling a bladed weapon over a length of 3 inches shall be imprisoned and their goods confiscated! I am also signing into law a prohibition on all private possession of all bladed weapons of a length longer than three inches, this also punishable by imprisonment. Any person seen in the streets of Skara Brae while in possession of a bladed weapon shall be considered an enemy of the state and be met with all force needed to disarm them.

Weapons are the enemy, without a sword this tragedy would not have happened and our city would not be in the throws of such terrible acts.

I have enlisted the assistance of 'the Union' to bolster the city guard to enforce this new era of peace in our streets. Our friends at the Union are a shining example to all of us and how organization and a grass roots effort can enter a larger group and show us the error of our ways. I urge you to welcome the Unionists on our streets and to embrace these new laws.

Remember, these changes are being made for your protection!

In your service,
Marshall Blackwell, Mayor of Skara Brae
